Terrafin Battles the Boom Brothers is the fourth Skylanders novel in the Mask of Power series. The Earth Skylander, Terrafin, is the title character of this novel, and he is joined by SprocketSonic Boom and Hot Dog.

Summary

Boom! When some innocent-looking sweet stuff explodes in a Gillman's face, it leads Terrafin on an amazing journey to the summit of Junk Mountain. Can he and his friends conquer Kaos or is Skyland's biggest brawler about to meet his match? Based on the characters from the smash hit Skylanders video games, Terrafin Battles the Boom Brothers is the fourth tale in the thrilling Mask of Power series.

Plot

Professor Puck’s Fantastic Fairy Fair is in full swing, and Gurglefin is eager to join the festivities. After debating on what to do first, he notices a fortune-telling tent run by one Madame Destiny and decides to have her tell him his fortune. She informs him that he will come to a sticky end, which Gurglefin dismisses until he buys an explosive cotton candy from one Sweet-O-Tron 3000 that promptly explodes in his face.

Meanwhile, Terrafin, Sonic Boom, and Hot Dog have all arrived at the fair for a much-needed day off. While having fun at the fair, however, Terrafin and Sonic Boom hear someone crying and follow the sound to find a stone golem named Rocky, who is crying out of nervousness for his upcoming performance. As he explains his situation to the two Skylanders, Rocky’s boss, Professor Puck, finds him and forces him on the stage despite Terrafin and Sonic Boom’s protests.

Hot Dog then rejoins Terrafin and Sonic Boom and leads them to where Gurglefin is encased in cotton candy. Sonic Boom’s screech blows the cotton candy right off of Gurglefin, and he recounts the story of how he was trapped in the sticky sweet. Concerned by the story, the Skylanders go to meet Professor Puck but are stopped by Madame Destiny, who unsuccessfully tries to get the Skylanders to let her read their fortunes. As they leave, she retreats back into her tent and proudly proclaims to a mysterious person through her crystal ball that they are utterly doomed.

Meanwhile at the Eternal Archives, Sprocket meets with Master Eon. Master Eon is concerned about the location of Squirmgrub as he needs to discuss the location of the Mask of Power’s next segment with the Warrior Librarian, but, Squirmgrub is nowhere to be seen. This is even more concerning as the Earth Segment is located and revealed to have taken the form of a stone golem...

Back at the fair, the Skylanders and Gurglefin head to Rocky’s concern to seek out Professor Puck. Despite the reputation golems have for gravelly singing voices, Rocky’s smooth singing voice wins over the crowd and sends them into a dancing frenzy from which they can’t break free. While they dance, the Sweet-O-Tron 3000 emerges from the shadows and begins tossing explosive cotton candy everywhere, and all the patrons inside are trapped. With them distracted, the Sweet-O-Tron and a few trolls kidnap Rocky and flee the scene.

The Skylanders break free of the cotton candy trap using a mixture of Hot Dog’s flames and Sonic Boom’s screeches, and while they are breaking free, Sprocket arrives at the fair and witnesses Rocky and Madame Destiny getting hauled away. Sprocket immediately goes to rescue Madame Destiny, but is captured by the Sweet-O-Tron. It is then that Terrafin joins the battle and goes to rescue Madame Destiny. However, Madame Destiny is revealed to actually be Kaos in disguise, and he sends his minions to deal with the Skylanders while he hauls off Rocky. Despite Terrafin being joined by Hot Dog, Sonic Boom and even Gurglefin, he is unable to stop Kaos from escaping and finds himself confronted with the Sweet-O-Tron, who is preparing to self-destruct and coat the whole fair in a sticky doom.

The Skylanders send the Sweet-O-Tron flying off before it can explode, and with one problem taken care of, they try to determine where to find Rocky. Gurglefin manages to find a leftover stick from the cotton candy bombs that reveal they were manufactured by the Boom Brothers’ Explosive Emporium, and so, the Skylanders decide to start there. They return to the Eternal Archives to consult the Encyclopedia Skylandia, a set of encyclopedias that contain everything there is to know about Skylands. They ask Squirmgrub for the location of the volume they need, but he claims that it is conveniently missing. After a back and forth with Squirmgrub, he reveals that the book had actually been put on the wrong shelf, and hesitantly hands it over to Master Eon and the Skylanders. The heroes note how suspiciously Squirmgrub was acting, but Master Eon writes it off as an honest mistake while Squirmgrub goes to warn Kaos of the Skylanders’ oncoming arrival.

The Skylanders then head to the Emporium’s location in the Junk Mountains, and begin their trek only to be ambushed by falling trash tossed by a Trash Ogre. Sprocket creates a shield to protect the Skylanders from the ambush, while Sonic Boom uses her screeches to send an avalanche of trash over the Trash Ogre. With the Trash Ogre defeated, the Skylanders head to the Explosive Emporium and break in after taking out the cannon that guarded the front entrance, and follow a trail of pebbles to where Rocky is kept.

Using hats stolen from Grenade Generals as disguises, the Skylanders sneak through the Emporium and find Rocky’s location at last. They rescue him, but it turns out that the whole thing was a trap set by the Boom Brothers and Kaos, who had intended to lure the Skylanders to Rocky and then have his troll armies finish them off once they were trapped. Kaos bets the Skylanders will fail, but Terrafin merely bets five dollars that Kaos will be laughing on the other side of his face by the end of the day before the battle begins.

The Boom Brothers use a disco dynamite made with Rocky’s voice to send the Skylanders into a dancing fit from which they can’t break free. But, Terrafin concocts a plan. He has Sonic Boom scream so loud that it drowns out the dynamite’s music, then signals to Hot Dog to bark out a barrage of flaming fireballs that make the floor so hot that it distracts Kaos and Glumshanks long enough for Terrafin to shove them out of the room. The Skylanders all celebrate, but not for long, as Sprocket realizes that the entire building is actually a rocket, and Kaos’s forces are planning to blow them to smithereens with a giant bomb unless they hand over Rocky.

Kaos attempts to light the bomb as Sprocket attempts to get the rocket working, but at Terrafin’s urging, Rocky breaks into song and sends Kaos’s forces dancing before they can light the bomb. However, in the time they took to start up the rocket, the Boom Brothers managed to capture Hot Dog and plan to use one of their pineapple grenades to blow the entire room sky-high. Stuck in a seemingly-sticky situation, Terrafin opts to surrender and urges his fellow Skylanders to do the same. While admitting defeat, Terrafin asks the Brothers who comes up with the ideas for all their bombs, leading the brothers to bicker so intensely that Boom One shoves the pineapple grenade in his brother’s mouth.

The grenade blows the Boom Brothers to smithereens, and the Skylanders use the rocket to flee the Emporium with Rocky in tow. They bring Rocky back to Master Eon, who reveal that the Earth Segment was not Rocky himself, but his singing voice. No longer able to sing, Rocky decides to head back to the Fair and get revenge on Professor Puck by ruining the concert he’s urged to perform with his now-awful singing. Professor Puck is chased out of town by the enraged crowd, and the Skylanders congratulate Rocky on his last gig.

The story continues in Cynder Confronts the Weather Wizard...
