Spyro versus the Mega Monsters is the second novel in the Skylanders franchise, and the first in an ongoing Mask of Power series of original novels set in the Skylanders universe. These all new stories feature favorite characters from Spyro’s Adventure, Giants and beyond.
Story Summary
Super-sized critters are popping up and causing havoc all over Skylands! Spyro and his fellow Skylanders set out on a mission to work out what's going on and save the day - but it seems the scheming Kaos is intent on beating them to it. Based on the characters from the smash hit Skylanders video game, Spyro versus the Mega Monsters is the very first novel in the new Mask of Power story series.[1]
Plot
The story begins with the Mabu, Nort, fishing in the rivers of the Stinky Swamp when he is suddenly attacked and devoured by a mega-sized monster...
Meanwhile, in Eon's Citadel, the Skylanders, Spyro, Trigger Happy, Jet-Vac, and Drill Sergeant are in a training session against an illusionary Goliath Drow. The training ends when Spyro's attempt to use The Daybringer Flame ended up burning Trigger Happy and Drill Sergeant. Calling it a day, Spyro and Master Eon are soon notified by Stealth Elf of a terrible monster in the Stinky Swamp, and the old Portal Master sends Spyro and Stealth Elf to investigate.
After saving a Mabu named Snuckles from a group of Chompies, Spyro and Stealth Elf learn from Snuckles that his friend, Nort, has gone missing. The group is then suddenly attacked by an unusually large titchy toad, whose toxic saliva causes Spyro and Stealth Elf to fall asleep during the struggle, leaving Snuckles in danger of being devoured by the oversized toad. The Mabu is saved from the toad by the evil Portal Master, Kaos, who had also saved Nort, and claimed to have renounced his evil ways to fight evil-doers, leaving Spyro and Stealth Elf in complete disbelief.
Kaos's heroic exploits are soon heard throughout Skylands, defeating mega-sized animals and saving the inhabitants before the Skylanders could have the chance, irritating the heroes. Spyro is soon accompanied by Jet-Vac and Drill Sergeant to travel to the Desert of Columns to save the Molekin, Diggs, from a strangely familiar mega-sized troll, but Kaos defeats it with ease, causing him to be the hero again. Back in Eon's Citadel, a large flying ship hovers above the island, and Master Eon, Hugo, and the Skylanders are confronted by the Warrior Librarians of the Eternal Archives, with their leader being Curator Wiggleworth, who has heard of Spyro's legendary chronicles in the books of the Ancients. The Librarians have come to tell Master Eon of a threat that endangers the Eternal Archives, and Spyro, Stealth Elf, Trigger Happy, and Drill Sergeant are assigned to help the Warrior Librarians to protect the Archives.
Upon arriving at the Archive, the Skylanders confronted a mega-sized Chompy Pod that was impervious to all of their attacks in its current size. The plant soon spored five giant Chompies, to which Spyro ultimately mastered his Daybringer Flame in taking down one of the large monsters. As the Skylanders were outmatched by the remaining giants, Kaos appeared, saving the Skylanders from the giant enemies by suspending the Chompies in midair using his magic staff.
Kaos then revealed that as a child he wanted to borrow a book called World Domination for Beginners and other related books from the Eternal Archive, but was told by Wiggleworth that they weren't available for loan (in order to keep them from falling into the wrong hands). The evil Portal Master threatened to release the giant Chompies upon the heroes if Wiggleworth didn't hand over a forbidden book to him. When Wiggleworth refused, Kaos released the Chompies to devour the group. Stealth Elf steals the magic staff from Kaos, and uses its power to enlarge Spyro two times the size of the giant Chompies, allowing the dragon to battle the giant enemies. While his fellow Skylanders dealt with Kaos and destroyed his magic staff, Spyro soon realized that Kaos's true plan was to test his staff on a few creatures (growing them into a giant size), trick people into thinking he was saving them just so he could attack the Archive and blackmail its curator, who Kaos thought would be blinded by hero worship like others have.
Realizing he was defeated, Kaos fled the scene, but not before revealing that his plan was only the beginning. Afterwards, some of the other Skylanders, including the ones present, are brought to the Eternal Archive in helping the Warrior Librarions repair the damage done to the Archives. Master Eon congratulated Spyro on his victory in stopping Kaos, and was more surprised that the purple dragon shared the glory with his fellow Skylanders who assisted him. Spyro then went with Master Eon after hearing that Wiggleworth wanted to show the young dragon something within the Archive's vault. The Portal Master showed Spyro the book Kaos was after, the legendary Book of Power, a book of prophecy that shows the most dreadful predictions, such as the fall of the Skylanders, and Spyro himself...
The story continues in Gill Grunt and the Curse of the Fish Master.
