“I'm missing the Thousand-Yard Stare class for THIS?!”
    —Skull, Beard Science

Skull is Hex's familiar in the Skylanders Academy spin-off series, as well as her weapon of choice.

Background

Personality

Skull is cynical and straight to the point, most of the time doing the talking and sarcastic remarks for Hex even if at her own expense. He is also lazy and reckless, sometimes interfering in their schoolwork, and boastful of his own abilities. However, his ego actually hides a fear of being alone and separated from Hex's social life, causing him to take even more impulsive actions if their friendship appears threatened.

Abilities

Skull is constantly surrounded by a spherical force field, which appears to protect him from most threats and support the weight of a Skylander - though the same cannot be said about good balance on top of the sphere. He is capable of levitation while inside the forcefield, and Hex can use telekinesis to make him tackle enemies and magical tethers to slow him down.

Over the years, he has also learned various spells from his sorceress, and use them with ease. If removed from the forcefield through one of these spells, Skull is slow and his only means of defense are the spells, as he has to hop his way to any destination.

Story

History

In the past, Hex chose Skull from other various skeletons to create a familiar bond, with the side effect of also binding the dark side of her supernatural energies.

Season 1

In the series premiere, Skull was summoned by Hex to assist her during the Skylander Games, but the trial left both of them exhausted. Because of their performance, Hex and Skull failed the Skylander Games and had to study for another year at Skylander Academy. Skull then ranted to Hex that they lost to Bad Breath, whose only ability was burping.

Hex and Skull failing the Skylander Games

In the cold open of Anger Mismanagement Hex and Skull are in a counseling session with Hugo about his refusal to work as a familiar. However, Hugo was threatened by sheep halfway through and fled without finishing the session. Later, during the Chilli Chomp Competition, Skull was part of Ka-Boom's team despite his inability to eat.

In Beard Science, Skull accompanied his sorceress in a class with Master Eon, and after the headmaster accidentally made the cadets think Roller Brawl's uniqueness was in her balancing, he got used in a human pyramid, much to his dismay. When Master Eon passed them later, without his beard, only Hex had a vague recollection of him, but Skull dismissed her concerns and they got distracted into other activities to discover their unique appeal.

In Assault on Skylander Academy, Skull was used as weaponry against the Doom Raiders' failed infiltration, knocking Dreamcatcher away as they escape. However, when he and Roller Brawl attempted to stop Kaos' attack on the school by diving into him, they were defeated by his empowered dark magic spheres.

Season 2

In Spyromania, Skull is seen watching Jet-Vac's class with Hex, until the cadets were interrupted by Spyro's attempts in getting attacked to obtain a new power.

Between the two episodes, Hex starts taking more classes alone and training by herself, leading to Split Decision where Skull is the lead character. Selfishly convincing himself that Hex was drifting away from him to become a Skylander alone, Skull started interfering in his classes to get her attention, only to become enraged when she talked about her own journey to become a Skylander. Believing they should part ways, he used one of her spells to break his familiar bond and his orb, jumping away without noticing Hex being overcome by a dark force.

Unaware of her dark transformation, Skull reached out to Master Eon in the library to try and skip cadet applications to become a Skylander alone, only to startle Eon when he noticed his familiar bond was gone. The wizard hurriedly explained that Skull's bond to Hex also bound the evil side of her supernatural essence and it should've never been undone; to which the skeleton admitted was done out of fear of losing his only friend. Soon after, Spyro arrived to report that she was infecting the entire Academy with a strange compulsion to spread evil to others.

With the looming threat that the entire school would be turned into pawns to evil, Eon hurriedly took his Guide to Spells Gone Awry to instruct Skull how to use a spell of Reverse Evil, with Spyro helping out to drop him on Hex before they were overrun. Though Spyro was quickly taken down and Skull was in Hex's grasp as the evil side gloated about saving him a hug, he quickly recited the spell, allowing Hex to regain her consciousness and for the two to work together to undo the zombification on the rest.

As the day was saved, Spyro took the confused group inside to explain the situation and left Skull and Hex alone, and the familiar and admitted his selfish actions to the sorceress. Understanding the situation, she explained that she was training alone to help both and suceed in their next Skylander Games, and Skull confessed that he wanted nothing more than wanting his friend back, regaining his familiar bonds and getting a hug from his sorceress, this time with good intentions.

Relationships

Hex

They are polar opposites, and because of his rebellious and cynical personality, their teamwork suffers greatly. However, despite directing harsh words to anyone including her, they still like each other and don't shy away from hugs and kisses in emotional moments.

Roller Brawl and Wind-Up

Though he doesn't share their enthusiasm for most classes, he follows them along with Hex through their misguided ideas.

Trivia

  • Skull is based on Hex's skulls in her Series 2 figure artwork and figure, with slightly different coloring.
  • Though he can't eat, he pretends to eat the chilli in the Chilli Chomp Competition in Anger Mismanagement, and ends up incapacitated despite only having it touch his forcefield.
  • Skull's spells are phrases with the words in reverse, unlike the gibberish spells used by Kaossandra and Eon, and Strykore's entire chants in reverse. The spells are:
    • Now is time to say peace out and nice to know you, sayonara, ciao, and aloha!
    • Please forgive my grave mistake, a friend who didn't give but would always take.
