“Fear the Dark!”
    —Hex's official catchphrase

Hex is an undead elven sorceress who is one of the Core Skylanders in Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure.

Character Development

With the working name of Shadow Maid, Hex was the first Skylander designed with indirect and homing attacks in mind.[2] She was one of the Skylanders used for early painting prototypes, and had less details in her armor and red highlights on most of the outfit.[3]

Background

Physical Traits

Hex is a light blue-skinned, slender and slightly tall figure, aided by her constant levitation and using magical purple mist. The elf wears a black headdress that goes around her entire head, covering her short black hair (as seen with Hallow's Eve Hex) and tiny ears; the headdress is composed of three flat hornlike sections on each side, the highest one having two tips. Her eyes are a featureless light blue(sometimes depicted as milky white), and notably she has a large forehead. In some depictions, rather than a visible eye border, she wears black eye shadow.

She wears a sleeveless black dress with a large collar, with many dark gray lines dividing sections of it and converging at the chest in the shape of an ankh. The middle of the dress has a slightly different shade, closer to dark green, while the rest is a very dark gray blue. Hex also wears a pair of black shoulder pads pointing upwards and gauntlets, which have dark gray spirals along the forearm and dots on the back of the hand. Though rarely visible, she also wears black boots, which have concave soles; the rest of her legs is not modeled. As seen in Ring of Heroes, Hex is very skinny, with a significant part of her ribcage visible through her skin.

Personality

Since her Undead transformation, Hex has become spooky, mysterious, and even sinister, striking fear into the hearts of her enemies. She has also developed a fondness for skulls. It has been said that Hex has laughed only once since her transformation -- apparently at an incident involving Trigger Happy, Slam Bam, and a gold coin in the rear end. She also has a tendency to act on her own, even if it means not sharing her plans with her allies. Strangely in Skylanders: Battlecast, Hex appears more prideful in battle, as well as sounding more cynical, and like other Skylanders in it, will scold and sneer at the Battlecaster should they harass her by poking.

Biography

Long ago, Hex was a gifted and powerful sorceress who traveled deep into the underworld to confront the Undead Dragon King named Malefor, who made several attempts to capture her to learn her secrets. Though she successfully battled the dragon, Hex returned from the underworld changed – having unwillingly joined the ranks of the Undead. Many are wary of her since her transformation, suspecting she has used her powerful magic for evil purposes. But Eon trusts her, and views her as a valuable Skylander ally.

Story

History

Malefor Hex

Before her undead transformation, Hex battled against Malefor in the depths of the underworld.

Hex was a skilled elven sorceress whose spell-casting abilities once attracted great attention from all across Skylands. Many years ago, news of her power even passed to the dark and dangerous underworld. Here, the evil Undead Dragon King, Malefor, hatched a plot to kidnap her. But try as they might, Malefor's minions could not track down the slippery sorceress. Together with the entire local magic community of soothsayers, sorcerers, witches, wizards and warlocks, Hex was forced into hiding. A life on the run was not a great deal of fun, so Hex decided to take on the terrible Dragon King.

She descended into the darkest depths of the Undead underworld. Here, to Hex's surprise, the Undead army of Rhu-Barbs, Shadow Knights and Bone Archers held back from attack. But soon she realized the gruesome reason why: by entering the land of the Undead, she had become one of them. A furious Hex unleashed her most destructive magic on Malefor. When the smoke cleared, Hex was back in her village, but her Undead legacy remained. Nowadays she is the protector of magic-wielders everywhere, not to mention one of Eon's most admired Skylanders.[4]

Spyro versus The Mega Monsters

Hex was mentioned as one of the two Skylanders (the other being Cynder) who was assigned by Master Eon to investigate a mega-sized cockroach that was terrorizing Lucky Lagoon. However, Kaos, who claimed to be renouncing his evil ways to battle evildoers, dealt with the problem long before the two Undead Skylanders arrived on the scene.

Cynder Confronts the Weather Wizard

Hex transported to the Cloudless Desert to inform Cynder and Zook that Master Eon wanted to see them. When a freak rainstorm appeared, the shower turned the sand dunes into quicksand that threatened to pull the beachgoers into it. Hex participated in saving the inhabitants, but received some negative feedback of her sinister disposition from two Mabu, whom Cynder soon drove away.

At the Eternal Archive, the Skylanders learned that there had been multiple reports of unusual weather conditions throughout Skylands. They soon read a distress letter from Morbo, the Night Mayor of the Isle of the Dead, where Hex, Cynder and Zook would venture to investigate if the weather is linked to what's happening on the island and find the Undead segment to the Mask of Power. Once there, the Skylanders are attacked by the aggressive undead wildlife, but were saved by a spectre named Flunky and his pet Stump Demon, Dogwood. They were afterwards guided to the Ghost Town, where Mayor Morbo explained to the Skylanders of the sunny weather conditions that threaten to kill their undead crops, and the sudden weather was caused by a powerful Weather Wizard named Hurrikazam. Hurrikazam soon appeared in town, demanding the villagers to hand him his tribute of pies and spiriting away the inhabitants that provided them, including Flunky.

Cynder Hex

Hex imprisoning Cynder as the dragoness tried to reason with her companion.

Despite the Skylanders' best efforts, they were unable to stop Hurrikazam, who retreated to his Cloud Citadel. Afterwards Morbo revealed that the undead villagers who were taken by Hurrikazam were turned back into living breathing creatures by a weather machine. The Skylanders infiltrated Hurrikazam's citadel by allowing themselves to be taken captive by Gargantulas that were associated with Morbo. Upon seeing the Undead Energy Extractor, the machine that turned the undead back into the living, the Skylanders were discovered and they fought against Brock and his group of Drow. It was soon revealed that Hurrikazam wasn't evil; he was forced to commit the evil deeds by Kaos, who threatened to cut Hurrikazam's Amazing, Fantastic, Incredible, Surprising, Unfathomable, All-Coloured Rose should he refuse to do as the evil Portal Master commanded. Kaos revealed that he was draining the undead villagers of their undeadliness to store it up in a tank of Undead energy and shower every island of Skylands with undead rain to turn the living into undead and destroy the other Elements.

When the Skylanders attempted to intervene, the Weather Wizard relunctantly subdued the Skylanders with the weather machine, but refused to drain them of their element at the cost of his precious flower. Kaos tried to perform the task of draining the Skylanders' powers himself, but accidentally released them instead. Suddenly, Hex saved Kaos from her allies by imprisoning Cynder and Zook in her bone fortresses, defecting to Kaos' side. She proclaimed to Cynder and Zook that they weren't her friends and she was tired of being feared, longing to be normal again. Hex allowed herself to provide Kaos her powerful Undead energy, and the Portal Master eagerly began the procedure using the Undead Energy Extractor. However the machine was overloading by the amount of power Hex contained, something that the elf sorceress had planned all along and never actually defected to Kaos.

The machine exploded, and after a brief moment of Cynder and Zook seeing Hex's true form, Hex revealed that she had since and always had embraced her dark side. Immediately afterwards, she assisted her fellow Skylanders in defeating Kaos and his army of Drow. After returning the undead inhabitants back to normal, the Skylanders were given a heroes' welcome and Morbo offered to allow Hex to stay on the Isle of the Dead. Although flattered, the undead sorceress revealed that she belonged to the Skylanders; her friends. As a token of his gratitude, Hurrikazam granted the Skylanders an Amazing, Fantastic, Incredible, Suprising, Unfathomable, All-Coloured Rose seed: the Undead segment to the Mask of Power.

Upon returning to the Eternal Archive, Hex, Cynder and Zook were given the horrible news from Spyro that Squirmgrub kidnapped Master Eon and had taken five of the pieces to the Mask of Power with him.

Return of the Dragon King

Hex was putting on a charity magic show in Woodburrow, entertaining a crowd. When she asked for a volunteer for her next magic act, the elf sorceress picked the fairy, Calliope, as her assistant. Unknown to Hex, Calliope stole the sorceress' powers, who felt dizzy from the effects but managed to continue her act without trouble.

Hex clothing damage

Hex after being attacked by Drow warriors.

An unknown time after the encounter with Calliope, Hex was attacked by Drow and discovered that her magic was reduced to the simplest of spells, losing even her levitation powers. Returning to the Skylanders Academy in bad shape, she found out that Spyro was in a similar situation. After talking to Persephone and finding out that their magic was stolen, they reached the conclusion that Calliope is behind the disappearance of their powers. Despite her protests to solve the issue alone, they set out to the Cadaverous Crypt with the help of Wallop, Flynn and Mags, and the sorceress expressed being reminded of old fears when questioned by Spyro about her attitude.

On the way to the Crypts, the group found Cynder being attacked by Rotting Robbies and Bone Chompies until Wallop stepped in to help followed soon after by Hex and Spyro. Cynder revealed that her powers were stolen by Calliope as well and she had been tracking the fairy down with a charm bought from Auric, which was lost after the encounter with the undead monsters. Noticing the pattern with Spyro and Hex having their magic stolen, the Skylanders ventured inside the caves of the Crypts, and soon found the fairy. Before they could reach her however, Calliope smashed the gem containing their powers on a strange rock by the commands of a hidden shadow, who proceeded to absorb them and regain his own. As soon as they found out who was behind it, Malefor announced his return and attacked them with fire, rendering the group unconscious.

Hex and the other Skylanders awakened to find themselves imprisoned while unconscious, being looked after by Calliope. After coming back to their senses, they were told by the fairy that Malefor had left to destroy the Skylanders Academy as payback for the problems they caused to him. Though they tried to convince Calliope to help them by sharing their experiences with her, the fairy ran away ashamed by their attempts to forgive her, but soon help arrived as Flynn and Mags reached their cell. With the Dread-Yacht, the group returned to the damaged Academy as fast as they could, and challenged Malefor to a battle.

Despite Malefor's boasting, Spyro, Cynder, Hex and Wallop stood their ground, and by distracting him they had Mags trap Malefor with chewing gum. Using the little power that she had left, Hex redirected Flynn's ship to crash into Malefor, but it only slightly damaged his armor. The evil dragon once again attacked, directing his fury at Spyro, which confused the group as Hex was the one who defeated him before. Unable to do any further damage, they were starting to lose again until Calliope and Persephone intervened, and directed Spyro to attack Malefor's chestplate to reveal the crystal he used to drain the Skylanders' powers.

To destroy the chestplate, Hex used a spell on Spyro that would redirect his speed into a stronger impact with an orb. Once it was out of the way Spyro destroyed the crystal inside and released the powers of all defeated Skylanders. Malefor attempted to keep attacking, but at full power, the Skylanders managed to quickly tie his tail to the Dread-Yacht's anchor. With Wallop throwing the ship over the island, Malefor was dragged along. Despite his pleas of help to Calliope, she and the others only watched as he fell to the lower parts of Skylands. The fairy regretted having started the trouble to begin with, but Master Eon assured that the Academy would be rebuilt and the Skylanders and their allies would help her regardless.

Relationships

Cynder

Cynder and Hex commonly go on missions together and appear to get along, but their actual relationship is unknown despite sharing a dislike for Malefor. However, in Ring of Heroes, their relationship description explains that Cynder is determined to not let her ally give in to darkness.

Zook

Hex is often irritated by Zook's laidback demeanor, but tolerates him. However she doesn't like it when he calls her "Hexy" or plays the didgeridoo.[5]

Spyro

The dragon doesn't doubt Hex's loyalties, but doesn't agree with her way of attempting to solve things without help.

Malefor

When the Undead Dragon King heard about Hex's powers and sought to kidnap her, Hex was forced to go into hiding to avoid capture. Eventually she grew tired of hiding and confronted Malefor in the underworld, defeating the evil dragon. However the battle cost Hex everything as she was turned Undead, which ruined her reputation of being a famed sorceress. When Malefor returned, Hex was uncertain about facing the very one who took away everything she had been once again. But, in battle, he seemed to have little interest in having his revenge against her, directing his anger towards Spyro instead.

Stealth Elf

Though the two elves haven't been seen interacting in any extra material so far, the official Ring of Heroes mentioned they could probably be the best of friends. Surprisingly, in the render where they hang out for the Day of Friends, Hex is seen smiling, something she almost never does.[6]

Gameplay

Awakening powers from unknown depths from fighting Malefor in the Underworld, Hex had her magic changed to strange spells, such as levitation, burning phantom orbs, the ability to make skulls rain from the sky, and to summon and banish bones in wall formations. Her Wow Pow allows her to create a skull monster that spits smaller skulls at enemies.

In Cynder Confronts the Weather Wizard, Hex has been shown to be able to use telekinesis to levitate other people just like herself and to communicate telepathically with Master Eon, as well as a spell to stop the huge rainstorm in the Cloudless dessert, she is even shown to have vast amounts of undead energy in her body as the energy extractor exploded from draining too much. She also may have the ability to transform people into animals, as she threatened to turn Zook into a toad. In Return of the Dragon King, she was shown to have spells to redirect the trajectory of objects and to enhance the powers of other Skylanders, such a sphere that amplifies their speed and redirects its kinetic energy for a stronger impact.

In Skylanders: Battlecast, Hex has the ability to curse and weaken enemies with charms, spells or skulls summoned from a cauldron; much of her gameplay is tied around attacks that strike long after they have been cast. Her Gear is the Cursed Choker, an accessory meant to be put on enemies to gradually lower their health and power, and her Special Ability is Witch's Curse, reducing an enemy's max health. One of her stronger spells is also Foreboding Curse, in which Undead energy is channeled through a summoned skull to reduce an enemy's health to the smallest possible no matter how much they have. Hex's unreleased card, appearing in one of the updates, is the signature Relic Forbidden Phial, which multiplies max-health-reducing effects to other enemies.

In Skylanders: Ring of Heroes 's original version, Hex is an expert class, three-star character. She can use her curses and skulls as usual, but when set as a Leader, she can also increase the accuracy of the team with Skull Motion. When transformed into her Awakened Form, Hex replaces Phantom Orbs for Rain of Skulls, with new debuffs and shorter cooldown. In its reboot update, she was changed to a Legendary support character, keeping most of her abilities with new names, and gaining a new attack called Traces of Underworld that can improve her target's accuracy even further.

    Trivia

    Character

    • Hex is a word meaning the practice of witchcraft, usually as a curse.
      • Hex is also a Dutch word meaning "witch," but in Dutch it's spelled as "heks".
    • Her Skull Buddy resembles the Skull Mask in Crawling Catacombs, with red eyes instead of blue.
      • It is also considered one of the strongest Wow Pow abilities in damage since it can deal with more than 100 damage points to enemies in Giants, though through the games the value has been altered, sometimes making it even stronger than before.
      • Because one of her 3DS version upgrades, Cynder Confronts the Weather Wizard and Skylanders Issue 8 show Hex channeling Undead energy for stronger spells, it's possible she's channeling power from the Undead Eternal Source itself to create the Skull Buddy.
    • Her Series 2 figure is based on her Rain of Skulls.
    • She holds skulls on all of her toy figures.
    • Her LightCore figure's dress lights up red.
      • LightCore Hex is based on Hex's prototype figure, where she had red highlights on her details, lower dress and headdress. However, in the final figure, only her lower dress is still red.[3]
      • As promotion to the release of Skylanders: Swap Force, preorders received a Skylanders: Giants LightCore Hex during release.
    • The dress Hex wore when she was alive resembles the one worn by Mags.
    • During production for the scrapped 2017 Skylanders game by Vicarious Visions, Hex, Spyro, Stealth Elf, Tree Rex and Ninjini were redesigned to be older and have new outfits. [7]

    Gameplay

    • During Skylanders: Battlecast's development, Alluring Charm was known as Sinister Lure.
    • In the PvP mode of Skylanders: Giants, if Hex is turned to stone by Crusher while charging a Rain of Skulls attack, the attack will end immediately, but the number of skulls conjured while charging the attack will be added onto the next successful Rain of Skulls attack. (For example, if Hex conjures three skulls, is turned to stone while charging, then conjures four skulls on the next Rain of Skulls and successfully fires it, the Rain of Skulls will produce seven skulls).
    • In games after Trap Team, Hex's Compound Fracture will ignore enemy hitboxes if used right under them. This can cause repeated damage until they're moved away or their hurt animation pushes them away.
    • Unlike other characters in Skylanders: Ring of Heroes, Hex's base form has her LightCore appearance.
      • She also has no feet in this model, as seen in her attack ready animation and during a few frames of the official CGI trailer. This is also reflected in her Ethers, which do not have equippable boots.

    Voice Acting

    • Despite having English lines since Spyro's Adventure, Hex still speaks in gibberish when casting Rain of Skulls and Bone Wall, and when using Foreboding Curse in Battlecast, she speaks in Latin.
      • Though the lines don't appear to be entirely accurate Latin, sanguino afficio appears to be "cause bleeding" and vitalitas depletus seems to mean "exhaust lifeforce".
    • Hex is voiced by Courtenay Taylor, known for voicing both K.O. and T.K.O. on OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes, Jack in the Mass Effect franchise, and Natalya in the Destroy All Humans! franchise.
    • Hex has a much younger, raspier and echoing tone in Battlecast, especially noticeable in its voice files.
      • The new lines sound similar to the Wicked Witch of the West in Lego Dimensions, another character voiced by Courtenay Taylor and released the year before Battlecast.
      • This tone would later appear in the Skylanders Academy TV show where she kept her voice actress, though much more cheerful.

    Misc.

    • Hex is one of the few Undead Skylanders to have no skeletal features.
    • She bears a resemblance to Maleficent from Disney's Sleeping Beauty.
    • Her catchphrase is similar to Fright Rider's "Fear the Spear!" catchphrase and Gill Grunt's "Fear the Fish!" , as well as Tree Rex's "Be afraid of the Bark!" catchphrase.
    • She is the only Spyro's Adventure elven Skylander without a way to get around faster than walking (or really, floating).
    • Hex, Zap and Bop have the shortest names out of every Skylander.
    • All of her 3DS moves are two words that start with "S."
    • Hex is one of the three first Elven Skylanders, the others being Stealth Elf and Flameslinger
      • Hex is also the first elven creature from the Undead element, the second one being Fright Rider.
    • Despite being an elf, she lacks long ears, and when alive her eyes were greyish blue instead of glowing white. This trait is shared with Bushwhack, though his eyes are green and his skin is yellow.
      • Except for the ears, those traits are shared with the Collector.
    • "Boil, boil, toil and trouble" is quoted from the play Macbeth. The line is also said by a group of witches.
    • Though Hex is said to rarely smile in several sources, she does so in Forbidden Phial's card art.
    • Prior to the Rain of Trolls upgrade, Hex's Skull Rain attack summons dragon skulls that resemble Cynder's.
    • Of the Series 2 Undead Skylanders in Giants, Hex is the only one without a Series 3 counterpart.
