- “Fear the Fish!”
- —Gill Grunt's official catchphrase
Gill Grunt, also known as Gill, is a Gillman Skylander in Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure. He is one of the three Skylanders who come with the console starter pack of the game, alongside Spyro and Trigger Happy. His Series 3 counterpart is called Anchors Away Gill Grunt, and his Series 4 counterpart is named Tidal Wave Gill Grunt.
As a SuperCharger, Gill Grunt is redesigned and named Deep Dive Gill Grunt.
Background
Personality
Gill Grunt is one fish who never lets evil off the hook, willing to protect people other than himself and his friends. Brave and courageous, he is a loyal companion to have at your side. Protective and determined, Gill is a bighearted Gillman who never, ever gives up.[2] He believes himself to be one of the greatest singers in history, while others find his singing to be dreadful; a trait shared by all Gillmen. In spite of this, Gill Grunt's friends (with the exception of Eruptor) are too fond of him to tell the truth.
Biography
Gill Grunt was a brave soul who joined the Gillmen military in search of adventure. While journeying through a misty lagoon in the clouds, he met an enchanting mermaid. He vowed to return to her after his tour. Keeping his promise, he came back to the lagoon years later, only to learn a nasty band of pirates had kidnapped the mermaid. Heartbroken, Gill Grunt began searching all over Skylands. Though he had yet to find her, he joined the Skylanders to help protect others from such evil, while still keeping an ever-watchful eye for the beautiful mermaid and the pirates who took her.
Story
History
Gill Grunt grew up in a typical Gillmen city on the ocean bottom. From his glass bedroom bubble window, he would gaze out at circling cyber squid and menacing mega sharks. He couldn't have been more bored. So he joined the toughest military corps ever to soldier in salt water: the Gillmen marines. His first tour of duty sent him to a far-flung floating cloud land in the sky. Here, by the waters of a misty lagoon, Gill was disarmed by the unlikeliest of opponents - an enchanting mermaid. With his jaw on the ground and eyes bulging even more than usual, Gill was smitten. He vowed to return as soon he had stonkered enough spit spiders.
Return he did, but alas, it was a gut-wrenching sight. All trace of the mermaid had gone. Choking back a salty stream, Gill scoured the local lagoons for his first love. To make matters worse, he learned that the be-scaled beauty had been taken prisoner by pirates. All was not lost, however, for Gill was soon signed up by Master Eon. Now, he gets to combine his mermaid search with protecting Skylands from the pirate peril.[3]
During his time as a Skylander, Gill Grunt had heard of the heroic exploits of Punk Shock, the princess of the royal family in Wondrous Waters, after she repelled an Snow Troll attack. He then quickly recruited her into the Skylanders. The Gillman would soon catch sight of the water dragon, Echo, for heroically saving her water kingdom home from the evil Aqua Jocks, and Gill Grunt enlisted her as a Skylander on the spot.
The Machine of Doom
On Eon's island, Gill Grunt was celebrating the Skylanders' latest victory over the forces of evil with a song, much to the Skylanders' discomfort. Afterwards, the Gillman was sent on a mission with Spyro and Eruptor to the Mabu Market to check on Hugo and Flynn's report of flying sheep attacking. They soon found out that the sheep weren't really flying, but were carried by invisible trolls led by a Spell Punk who were looking for an item called the Chattering Key for Kaos. Gill Grunt later embark on a journey with Spyro, Boomer, Flynn, and Eruptor to the Forest of Fear to find the Chattering Key, which was used to unlock a tomb that contained an Arkeyan weapon. The Gillman fell victim to the Fungus Rings of Despair, and his worst fear came to life as he hallucinated being barbecued alive by two trolls who intend on eating Gill Grunt. Spyro soon saved Gill Grunt from his nightmare along with the other Skylanders, and make their way through the Forest of Fear.
After finding the Chattering Key, and escaping from its guardian, the Skylanders were about to leave the Forest, but discovered that Kaos had captured Flynn. Not willing to sacrifice Flynn's life, the Skylanders allow Kaos to take the Chattering Key, which he then uses to unlock the tomb that leads inside the Pyramid of Just Rewards that contains the Machine of Doom. Refusing to give up, the Skylanders go to the other side of the pyramid with the help of the Chattering Key, and they reached the Machine of Doom before Kaos did. Boomer attempted to pilot the Machine, but lost control of it, and Kaos revealed that the machine was really a trap designed by the Arkeyans to capture anyone who might be tempted to steal a weapon capable of destroying the Core of Light, and Kaos tricked the Skylanders into seizing the Machine of Doom, therefore springing the trap created by the Arkeyans, so that they can be buried alive.
However, Kaos's plan was thwarted as the Skylanders used the crumbling Machine of Doom to escape from the pyramid. Although Kaos escaped, the Skylanders celebrated their victory as Gill Grunt begins singing again, much to Eruptor's annoyance.
Spyro versus The Mega Monsters
Gill Grunt made a notable cameo as one of the Skylanders called by Master Eon to help restore the walls of the Eternal Archives after they were damaged by Kaos during his attempt to steal the Book of Power.
Gill Grunt and the Curse of the Fish Master
As the Skylanders finished repairing the damage done to the Eternal Archives, Spyro called Gill Grunt over to the halls of the Archives so that he and the Gillmen could look into the Book of Power with Master Eon, Hugo, and Wiggleworth. The two Skylanders were horrified to see a vision in the book showing the Core of Light destroyed and darkness swarming the skies, before seeing a glimpse of the Mask of Power, an evil artifact created by a group of Spell Punks that was scattered across Skylands by the old Portal Masters long ago into eight pieces hidden in objects that were completely opposite to the fragments.
Realizing that Kaos had already found the Tech fragment of the Mask and wanted to reassemble the Mask to use the it to destroy the Core of Light, Spyro and Gill Grunt became determined to find the rest of the fragment before the evil Portal Master does. Master Eon was able to find the location of the next fragment from the Book of Power and sent Gill Grunt to Deep Water Wasteland to locate it. As soon as Gill Grunt stepped into a bar full of pirates, he unintentionally enraged a Squiddler, who was about to gang up on the Gillmen with his crewmates. Before a fight broke out, a rampaging Cloud Kraken smashed the bar to smithereens, and despite Gill Grunt's attempts to calm the supposedly docile sea creature, it was about to eat the Gillman alive.
Zap and Wham-Shell then came to the rescue and saved Gill Grunt from the clutches of the Cloud Kraken, who then turned its blind fury upon a pirate ship called the Fearsome Fang and its crew. The ship's captain, Grimslobber, mysteriously scared off the Cloud Kraken without having to do a thing, confusing Gill Grunt, Zap, and Wham-Shell. Although Gill Grunt didn't want any trouble with Grimslobber and his band of pirates after the captain called the Gillman names, Zap unintentionally asked them about a treasure one of the pirates accidentally blurted out, prompting the seemingly friendly Grimslobber to surround the Water Skylanders with his crew and attack them. Gill Grunt, Zap, and Wham-Shell narrowly escaped the Fearsome Fang and into the safety of the sea, leaving Grimslobber to swear vengeance.
The Water Skylanders then hear from Spyro that Kaos was after the Water Fragment as well, and Gill Grunt quickly lead his fellow Water Skylanders to the Kingdom of the Merpeople, knowing that the merpeople, who have swam the waters for thousands of years, would know the location of the fragment. The Skylanders discovered the kingdom was deserted, with only the elderly, children, King Scalebeard, Prince Aquan, and Princess Finella still within the kingdom's barrier. Suddenly Prince Aquan and Princess Finella fell under a strange trance and swam out of the kingdom along with several other merfolk with the Skylanders in hot pursuit to see where they were going.
During the chase, Wham-Shell mysteriously had fallen under a spell and turned on Gill Grunt and Zap, capturing Zap and dragging the nearly unconscious water dragon into a cave where the hypnotized merfolk went into. Gill Grunt soon discovered that Wham-Shell and merfolk were being controlled by Captain Grimslobber, who was using the Fish Master's Crown, an artifact that allows the wearer to have control over any creature of the sea, to enslave the merpeople and force them to haul out gem-eels and ship them to the surface where Grimslobber would become rich.
Gill Grunt soon fell under the control of the Fish Master's Crown, but with the help of a captured Zap, the Gillman was able to break free of the curse, causing Grimslobber to lose control over a portion of the merpeople and Wham-Shell when trying to regain his control over Gill Grunt. During the confusion, which resulted in the gem-eels getting freed, Grimslobber lost his hold on the Crown and it shattered into two pieces, fully freeing the merfolk. As the pirate captain made a hasty retreat, Gill Grunt hung onto the diving bell Grimslobber was in and confronted the captain and his crew on board the Fearsome Fang. With the help of the freed merfolk, Zap, Wham-Shell, and even Spyro, the Gillman bested Grimslobber and his pirate crew.
In a last attempt to kill Gill Grunt, Grimslobber pulled out a pistol after claiming that he would change his ways, but missed the shot when the merfolk tilted the ship. Gill Grunt attempted to save the pirate captain (who couldn't swim) from falling overboard, only to see the Cloud Kraken swallow Grimslobber whole. Kaos then revealed his presence, having recovered the pieces of the broken Fish Master's Crown that supposedly contained the Water Fragment. After taunting the Skylanders, the evil Portal Master made his leave but not before sinking the Fearsome Fang, causing Spyro, Gill Grunt, Zap, and Wham-Shell to quickly escape off of Grimslobber's sinking ship via portal.
Back at the Eternal Archives, it seemed the Skylanders had failed their mission to retrieve the Water fragment, when Gill Grunt checked Grimslobber's satchel he brought back with him and held a dirty rag the captain had used to wrap the Fish Master's Crown. The rag soon revealed itself to be the Water Fragment, making the Skylanders realize that Kaos had stolen nothing more than a worthless broken crown. Knowing that Kaos would be after the next fragment to the Mask of Power, Gill Grunt and Spyro both knew that the Skylanders would be ready for him.
Trigger Happy Targets the Evil Kaos
When Kaos was able complete the Mask of Power, Gill Grunt was one of the many Skylanders assembled to stop him. However despite infiltrating Kaos' Kastle, the evil Portal Master puts on the Mask of Power and used its abilities to steal the powers of all the Skylanders, including Gill Grunt's. The Gillman and his companions were nearly overwhelmed by Kaos, but were transported to safety by Master Eon.
Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure
Gill Grunt participated in the battle against Kaos's minions along with some of the other Skylanders to protect the Core of Light, taking out two Cyclops Choppers and a Goliath Drow. When Kaos's Hydra ultimately destroyed the Core, Gill Grunt, along with the other Skylanders, were banished from Skylands to Earth where they were turned into toys, and waited for the new Portal Master to find him.
After Kaos was defeated, Gill Grunt, Spyro, and Trigger Happy were present at the Core of Light with Flynn, Cali, Hugo, and Master Eon, listening to Kaos' idle threats in his temporary prison. The three Skylanders all shared a knowing glance to one another, as Kaos rambled on vowing to keep returning to conquer Skylands if he was to be banished to the Outlands again. Instead Kaos was banished to Earth, and shortly after his departure, Gill Grunt, along with Spyro and Trigger Happy, celebrated their victory together.
Skylanders: Giants
Gill Grunt, along with Spyro, Stump Smash, Stealth Elf, and Eruptor, are still frozen as toys on Earth and were put in a toy display inside a toy store called Super Toy Planet. They were few of the Skylanders who witnessed Kaos breaking free of his statue-like form due to his power as a Portal Master. When Kaos noticed the frozen Skylanders and taunted them, Gill Grunt and the other heroes agreed with Stump Smash when the tree creature angrily declared that if he could move, he'd be 'dropping the hammer' on Kaos right there and then. Afterwards, the present Skylanders could do nothing but watch as Kaos returned to Skylands with the use of a nearby Portal of Power.
The Kaos Trap
When Hugo called upon the Skylander Teams to help out Stealth Elf, Pop Fizz and Wash Buckler against an army of trolls, Gill Grunt's group of Skylanders was busy evacuating the inhabitants of Stonetown before the town's dam would wash them away. While carrying two villagers to safety, Gill Grunt apologized to Hugo but suggested the Mabu to call someone else who was available.
Rift into Overdrive
Gill Grunt was one of the Skylander party-goers who celebrated the last day of school at the Skylanders Academy. When Kaos escaped his Traptanium prison and had his new mysterious plan cut off the connection between Portals and other worlds, Gill Grunt wondered how he and the other Skylanders would fight Kaos and his army without portals to get them where they needed to go. Spyro enlisted Stealth Elf and Jet-Vac to Know-It-All Island to learn more about the Rift Engines from the Stone Heads. Terrafin volunteered to come along, with Gill Grunt following suit, mostly to make sure Terrafin doesn't do anything crazy.
Once at Know-It-All Island, the Skylanders and Flynn encountered Blobbers, who was sent by his village to learn about the strange rifts that were destroying everything across Skylands. A nearby Stone Head revealed to the group the history behind the Rift Engines and the fact that Kaos had awakened a power hidden long ago. Before the Stone Head could begin to tell the location of the Rift Engines, Kaos himself opened a rift and it consumed the island as soon as the Stone Head told a riddle to the Skylanders regarding the Rift Engine location. The Skylanders and their friends were able to be rescued by a passing Spitfire and Stormblade, who transported them to safety with their vehicles.
After Spitfire and Stormblade introduced themselves, and other non-Skylanders, Fiesta and Dive-Clops, to the group, they expressed interest in tagging along with the Skylanders in their quest to find the Rift Engines. Despite expressing concern about the four non-Skylanders wanting to help them during their darkest hour, Gill Grunt and the other Skylanders allowed the SuperChargers to help them on their journey.
While trekking through Skylands, the Skylanders and SuperChargers figured out the Stone Head's riddle and came to the Whirlpool of Destiny where the Rift Engines were hidden in an underwater city. Dive-Clops and Gill Grunt took the Dive Bomber and sank into the deep depths of the whirlpool where they began their search for the Engines. With the help of the Dive Bomber's sonar ability, they were able to find a large chest that contained the Rift Engines, but became threatened by aggressive Hydra Hatchlings. During the battle, Gill Grunt was chosen by a Water-elemental Rift Engine and transformed into his SuperCharged form, using the Hydra Hatchlings to haul the chest back to the surface. The Gillman instructed Terrafin, Jet-Vac and Stealth Elf to unlock the chest and hope the Rift Engines inside chooses them. The power of the Rift Engines granted the three Skylanders the powers of SuperChargers and they used their newfound abilities to drive off an attacking group of Drow. With the Rift Engines at their disposal, the Skylanders, and the newly-formed Skylander SuperChargers, began their adventure in stopping Kaos and his latest plan.
Skylanders: Imaginators
When Spyro and Stealth Elf were racing one another, Gill Grunt was one of the Skylander spectators at the start of the race. The Gillman and his team later patrolled the Mushroom River, but Gill Grunt wound up falling asleep on the job. He would soon be found by Spyro and Stealth Elf, who came to the River to stop Kaos from acquiring Imaginite for his creation of Doomlanders.
Gill Grunt became one of the Skylanders who were brainwashed by Kaos and his new ally Ancient Brain, but was freed afterwards. He can be found in the Sensei Water Realm as the chapter's Storyteller.
Relationships
Spyro
Gill Grunt is best friends with Spyro. As a result of being some of the first modern Skylanders, Spyro and Gill Grunt have been working together protecting Skylands a little longer than some of the other members of the Skylanders. Their friendship was formed based on longevity and just more shared experiences.[4]
Trigger Happy
Other than Spyro, Gill Grunt is also best friends with Trigger Happy, also having worked together with the gremlin protecting Skylands since their days when they were some of the first modern Skylanders. Their friendship is based on their shared experiences and longevity.[4]
Mermaid Girlfriend
Gill Grunt fell deeply in love with a mermaid, whom he met while in the Gillman army. However, she was soon kidnapped by pirates when the Gillman returned to see her, leaving Gill Grunt greatly heartbroken and driving him to search all over Skylands to find the mermaid he loves. By Skylanders: SuperChargers, he and Buzz discuss that he's still searching the Eleven Seas for her.
Gameplay
Gill Grunt can shoot harpoons and also launch torrents of water at his enemies using his harpoon gun. He can also use his water jet pack to hover above ground, and even fly.

Trivia
- Gill Grunt is the only Skylander with a character-specific achievement, which involves taking out Kaos' Minions with Gill Grunt's water hose in Lava Lakes Railway.
- Gill Grunt is the personal favorite Skylander of Alex Ness, the former Chief of Staff in the development of Skylanders. Alex even admitted that he has a weird loyalty to Gill Grunt.[5]
- Although Gill Grunt's biography and later games state that he still searches for his mermaid girlfriend after joining the Skylanders, Alex Ness mentioned that the Gillman eventually rescued her before he became a Skylander. By rescuing his mermaid girlfriend, it made Gill Grunt realize he needed to do more to protect people other than just himself and his circle of friends from evil, and it was that thought that led to him to become a Skylander.[6][4] However, in Skylanders: SuperChargers, he and Buzz discuss that he's still searching the Eleven Seas for her, which questions the canonicity of the above statement.
- Despite being one of the Skylanders who can speak English in Spyro's Adventure, Gill Grunt still has few of his original gibberish lines. Toys for Bob claims they couldn’t part with one particular line because more than a few of the developers were known to walk around the office saying it for many months.[7]
- Gill Grunt is the only Skylander in the starter pack for Spyro's Adventure who doesn't have a Legendary counterpart. He is also the only console version starter to have an evil counterpart.
- He bears a resemblance to a Barracuda fish, though his early concept art was based more on an Angler.
- He also resembles the Pokémon Marshtomp and Gill-Man, the main antagonist from the 1956 movie by Universal Pictures "Creature from The Black Lagoon".
- His gameplay is similar to that of F.L.U.D.D.'s from Super Mario Sunshine.
- His Special Quest, Series 2 Wow-Pow and Series 3 counterpart are all called 'Anchors Away'.
- Series 2 Gill Grunt has the Quadrent Harpoons upgrade.
- In the Skylanders Universe: Quiz Quest, it is said that Gill Grunt was sent by Master Eon to invite Wham-Shell to join the Skylanders.[8]
- There is a glitch that can be performed in Skylanders Giants, where if Gill Grunt activates his water jetpack and then fires a harpoon just before landing, he will start to move extremely fast.
- This also works if Gill Grunt activates his water jetpack in a body of water (one that would normally have him enter his swimming animation, such as in several Heroic Challenges), and keeps it activated as he leaves the water. This resets as soon as the jetpack is deactivated.
- There is also a glitch that can be performed on the Xbox 360 version of Skylanders: Superchargers, where if Gill Grunt enters his flying mode and flies off any form of ledge, he will maintain altitude and very slowly descend as opposed to falling immediately to the ground as he would in previous games. Performing this glitch also allows Gill Grunt to rotate his body whilst in flight mode and cover ground at great speeds.
- Strangely, you need to hold the Attack 3 button for him to fly instead of just pressing it like most other flying Skylanders. This was changed in Trap Team, where the player can simply press Attack 3 and he'll start flying.
- Also, unlike most flying Skylanders, Gill Grunt flies in a standing position rather than in a quadruped position. Because of this, he cannot turn around while flying.
- In Imaginators, after falling off a edge, even a small one while in jetpack mode, Gill Grunt can turn around at 360° for a short period of time.
- Also, unlike most flying Skylanders, Gill Grunt flies in a standing position rather than in a quadruped position. Because of this, he cannot turn around while flying.
- He and Jet-Vac share various similarities:
- Both use a large guns and wear jetpacks.

- Imaginators is the only console game without a new Gill Grunt figure.
- Series 2 Gill Grunt's design is impossible to get in game as the design has the first upgrade from both paths.
- Tidal Wave Gill Grunt's artwork can be seen in the Season 1 intro of the Skylanders Academy TV series within The Book of Skylanders.
