Eruptor Meets the Nightmare King is the seventh installment in the Skylanders: Mask of Power seriesEruptor serves as the lead Skylander in this tale, joined by Grim Creeper and Slam Bam.

Summary

He might be one of Skylands' fieriest characters, but even Eruptor feels a chill in his bones when he sees his own double frozen in ice! What starts with a cold snap leads to a red-hot adventure as everyone's favourite Lava Monster takes on a nightmarish opponent. The secrets of the Mask of Power unfold further in this seventh thrilling tale based on the characters from the hit Skylanders game world.[1]

Plot

Eruptor, Slam Bam and Grim Creeper head to the Frozen Seas after receiving a distress call. They follow the screams for help that echo from the land to find that Kaos’s cyclopses have attacked an Ent archaeologist camp, and quickly get to work. The Skylanders drive the cyclopses away, and as the battle recedes, an Ent archaeologist named Professor Splinters approaches the Skylanders and reveals that the archaeologists had actually planned to call the Skylanders beforehand on account of a strange discovery they made.

As Professor Splinters goes to explain, however, a Cyclops Gazermage named Bloodshot manages to break free of the icy prison Slam Bam trapped him in and flees, falling straight into a crevice filled with ancient treasure. Bloodshot retrieves a coin from the treasure pile, and Kaos whisks him away while proclaiming that with that coin, he has all the time in the world. As the Skylanders muse on what he meant, Professor Splinters brings them to the site of his team’s discovery—which turns out to be Eruptor himself, but completely encased in unmeltable magic ice.

Having watched the whole scene from his Portal of Power, Master Eon arrives at the scene and reasons that the Eruptor within the ice had gotten there via time-travel, and asks how long this site dates back to. Professor Splinters explains that it dates back to five thousand years, and shows Master Eon one of the coins from the same pile Bloodshot stole from. Master Eon identifies the face on the coin as none other than the Nightmare King himself, Nefarion, and reasons that this site is his throne room. While trying to ration how Eruptor was here, however, Master Eon suddenly falls under a dizzy spell as the world around them all shifts. The images of Nefarion change to Kaos, while Nefarion himself disappears from everyone’s minds in favor of Kaos as emperor, and Professor Splinters changes to General Splinters, member of Kaos’s army.

Master Eon whisks the Skylanders and himself away to the citadel before anyone can get hurt, and shows via the Portal of Power that Kaos had gone back in time and changed history by conquering the past. With no time to spare, Master Eon takes the coin the Skylanders found in the dig site and uses the same spell Kaos used to send the Skylanders back to the past so they can prevent Kaos’s takeover. They arrive at the Forest of Fire, and are immediately attacked by flaming trees who claim the Skylanders to be enemies of the Nightmare King. The Skylanders struggle to fight back against the fiery trees, but are rescued when a portal suddenly whisks them to safety.

After reaching their safe haven, the Skylanders meet their rescuer, who turns out to be none other than Wizbit, the last remaining portal master of Nefarion’s era. Though the Skylanders try to convince Wizbit that they are on his side, Wizbit reveals that he’s already partnered with Kaos, who claimed that he came from the future to help Wizbit defeat Nefarion. Wizbit immobilizes the Skylanders using magic ropes that nullify their powers, then reveals his plan to sneak into Nefarion’s castle and use the Big Bad Ice Bomb to freeze Nefarion in an eternal winter.

With his plan revealed, Kaos sends stone golems to attack Wizbit and reveals that he was actually working for Nefarion the entire time, with Nefarion coming in and zapping Wizbit unconscious. With Wizbit taken care of and sent to the dungeons, Kaos takes the Big Bad Ice Bomb and traps the Skylanders in a cave-in—but thankfully, Grim Creeper had managed to saw through Wizbit’s ropes with his scythe and freed them just in the nick of time. Slam Bam manages to create an igloo to protect them from the rocks, and with very few ideas, all seems hopeless. As the Skylanders discuss their options, however, Grim Creeper gets the idea to slip out of the wreckage in his ghostly form and find help.

While wandering through the castle, Grim Creeper stumbles upon Kaos and Glumshanks, and finds out that they plan to use the Big Bad Ice Bomb themselves in order to freeze Nefarion and steal the Mask of Power from him. Having learned of the plan, Grim Creeper heads to the dungeons and rescues Wizbit from his incarceration, then sneaks him to Nefarion’s throne room so Wizbit can access the Portal of Power there to free Eruptor and Slam Bam. When they arrive, however, they find that Kaos has already brought the Big Bad Ice Bomb to Nefarion and initiated his plan. To keep Nefarion from destroying the bomb, Kaos creates many clones of himself to keep Nefarion preoccupied, which works so well that it allows Grim Creeper and Wizbit to access the Portal of Power unnoticed.

Using the Portal of Power, Wizbit rescues Eruptor and Slam Bam just before their igloo collapses, and they manage to locate the real Kaos after noticing that he is the only one with Glumshanks by his side. Before they can stop him, however, Kaos teleports away and steals the Mask of Power from Nefarion, revealing that all along, Nefarion was just a spoiled child. Before Kaos can put the Mask on, however, Eruptor throws a magma ball at the mask that sets it alight, then Wizbit steals the Mask with Grim Creeper and Slam Bam’s help.

Wizbit splits the Mask into fragments and banishes the fragments across Skylands, and Kaos escapes back to the present. Faced with the Big Bad Ice Bomb, which is dangerously close to detonating, Eruptor eats the bomb before it explodes and slows down the process of the explosion just long enough for Wizbit, Grim Creeper and Slam Bam to escape. Master Eon pulls the three of them back to the present, then heads to the Frozen seas where he uses a secret spell made by Wizbit to free Eruptor of his icy containment. As they reunite, the Book of Power glows and reveals that the Big Bad Ice Bomb’s remains were actually the Fire Segment of the Mask of Power, and the Skylanders celebrate. But, the celebration is cut short when the Book of Power unveils the future and reveals that Kaos is destined to wear the Mask of Power.
